Do you use the Great Wood at Northaw? Would you like to help maintain its 300 acres? If so, the group of volunteers that cares for the site would like to hear from you. Help is needed with a number of tasks, and those who want to volunteer can do as much or as little as they feel able. There is no obligation to turn up if you can't make it, and no experience is required.

Variety of tasks for volunteers

The Friends of Northaw Great Wood - a small group of volunteers managed by Welwyn Hatfield Borough Council - is on the look out for anyone who wants to join the team.

According to membership secretary, Sarah Anthony, there is a long list of tasks that the group needs help with.
"Our aim is to help maintain the Great Wood at Northaw – covering a range of tasks from glade clearance, vegetation and wildlife surveys, repairs to boardwalks, clearing fallen trees, and litter picking."
Sarah says the group has work parties every Friday and the first Sunday each month (9.30 to 12.30). She says volunteers are always welcome, and there is no obligation to attend every work party.

More about Northaw Great Wood

If you are not familiar with Northaw Great Wood, it's north of the B157, The Ridgeway, between Brookmans Park and Cuffley.

There is a car park (grid ref: TL 28222 04051) with a £1 honesty box. The visitor centre has information boards showing the trails, and what you might spot along the way. There is also a toilet block and picnic tables at the western end of the car park and in the middle of the wood where the yellow and blue trails meet.

Well signposted paths

The car park offers direct access to three way-marked paths of varying length. For those who have yet to walk the paths, our other site, Hertfordshire Walker, has more details in Walk 56: The Great Wood, Northaw. The walk shows all three trails; the yellow trail (2.75 miles), the blue trail (1.5 miles), and the red trail (0.75 miles).
