A warning has been sent out by Hertfordshire police alerting local residents to be on their guard against opportunistic burglaries that can happen during periods of hot weather.

In a message via the Hertfordshire Online Watch Link (OWL) people are warned not to leave their doors and windows open and unattended.

The following is from Derrick Sweeney, the Watch Liaison Officer, Hertfordshire Neighbourhood Watch.

Dear Watch Member,

With exceptionally hot weather forecast over the next couple of days, just a quick reminder that burglaries are often opportunistic, so please check that all windows and doors are closed and locked when you leave your home unoccupied, and also that are not left open and unattended when you are at home.

Heat can affect anyone, but older people, especially those over 75; babies and young children; people with certain health conditions; and people undertaking strenuous work, are at greater risk.

Heatstroke or heat exhaustion can be prevented by early intervention.  Please check on those at risk, including your older relatives and neighbours.

The NHS website’s advice includes these tips to help prevent overheating:

  • Avoid the heat:  keep out of the sun and stay indoors from 11am to 3pm if you’re vulnerable to the effects of heat.
  • Keep rooms cool by using shades or reflective material outside the windows. If not possible, use light-coloured curtains and keep them closed (metal blinds or dark curtains can make a room hotter).
  • Shut windows and pull down shades when it is hotter outside; open windows for ventilation when it is cooler.  Identify the coolest room in the house so you know where to go to keep cool.
  • Take cool baths or showers, and splash yourself with cool water.
  • Have regular cold drinks, such as water or diluted fruit juice. Avoid excess alcohol, caffeine or sugary drinks.
  • Wear loose, cool clothing, and a hat and sunglasses when outdoors.
