Mimmshall Brook, which runs alongside Warrengate Road, last burst its banks in the early hours of Monday 30 October 2000. Residents living had to leave the area temporarily after their homes flooded.

Flood alleviation work was carried out following the incident, resulting in walls being constructed along the west side of Mimmshall Brook and a large flood gate being put in place at the junction of Warrengate Road and Hawkshead Lane, just to the north and west of the bridge.

The gate was officially opened two years after the flooding. The Environment Agency tests the gate regularly.
