A Welham Green resident is asking for help in finding her lost pet skunk. Posting on Facebook and the website NextDoor, the owner warns people not to try to grab the creature unless they have protection.

Anyone who spots the skunk is told not to try to catch the animal without using a towel or thick gloves because it will bite or spray anyone getting too close.

Another local resident responding to the appeal posted on Next Door wrote “who keeps a skunk as a pet?”, and another writes “can’t we sniff him out?”

According to Wikipedia it is legal to keep skunks as pets in the UK:
It is currently legal to keep skunks as pets in Britain without a licence. With the exception of keepers who intend to house skunks in property owned by their local authority and therefore may be required to seek permission, there is no restriction on a person’s ability to keep a skunk as a domestic pet in the UK.
“Skunks are North and South American mammals in the family Mephitidae. While related to polecats and other members of the weasel family, skunks have as their closest Old World relatives the stink badgers.
“The animals are known for their ability to spray a liquid with a strong, unpleasant smell. Different species of skunk vary in appearance from black-and-white to brown, cream or ginger coloured, but all have warning coloration.”
