A horse found with baling twine tied around its neck and struggling to breathe had to be cut free on Wednesday afternoon, according to a report on the local Facebook site.

Horse owners have been urged to check their animals after a woman reported that her horse was suffocating and that its tongue and gums had turned blue.

According to the post on the Welham Green Community Facebook page, the twine was cut away with scissors, despite resistance from the horse which was described by the person who went to its rescue as being “pretty frantic”.

She said it’s unlikely that the horse could have been the victim of a freak accident.
“There is no possibility that he could have gotten baling twine tied so tight around his neck (that) he couldn’t breathe! No possible way a horse could tie it himself! The poor boy’s tongue and gums went bright blue, if we hadn’t of found him he would have been dead. Not only was he blue he was also pretty frantic and wouldn’t let us cut it off. Luckily we did.”
It’s claimed that the woman who found the horse heard “people/children in the bushes that the field backs onto”. However she says there is no evidence that they did it, “we did walk up and look but they disappeared.”

The woman is appealing to anyone with horses to be vigilant and check on their animals. She says if it hadn’t been found in time the horse could have died.
