The aim is to restore water levels and save fish stocks

A generator extracting water from a bore hole on the north side of Gobions Pond is being used to top up levels at the lake following fears that they had fallen so low that the fish in the pond might not survive.

Average of 2,200 gallons a day being extracted

Rather than move the fish, it was decided, following talks between North Mymms Parish Council (NMPC) and North Mymms Angling Club, that a bore hole would be the best solution.

The work has been carried out by local firm GPD Waterwells Ltd. The company’s Graham Davies says the previous water supply to the pond has disappeared over recent years due to a lack of rain.

He says they are legally allowed to draw 20,000 litres a day (4,400 gallons), but reckons the average to be taken from the bore hole will be around 10,000 litres a day (2,200 gallons).

“A charitable donation”

Mr Davies, who grew up locally and has fished at the site, says he’s paid for the work out of his own pocket as “a charitable donation” to maintain water levels at Gobions Pond.

The generator powering the extraction of the water from the bore hole will be running during daylight hours until the water level in the lake is up to an acceptable level.

The generator will then be removed as soon as the ground is hard enough to ensure the surface isn’t damaged.

The bore hole is at grid reference TL 25165 03797.
