Are you registered to vote in the December general election? Might you be away on Thursday 12 December and need a postal or a proxy vote? If so, here is what you need to do.

Registering to vote in person, by post, or by proxy

You need to register to vote by 11:59pm on Tuesday 26 November in order to be able to vote. Go to the government website and click on the green button at the bottom of the page labelled “Start Now”.

If you want to vote by post you need to register before 5pm on Tuesday 26 November.

If you’re going to be abroad on election day, you can apply to vote by proxy after you’ve registered. It takes time to vote by post from overseas.

Who you will be voting for

Now that parliament has been dissolved, prospective parliamentary candidates for Welwyn Hatfield will be putting their names forward. A list of the candidates will be published after Friday 15 November

You can find out who is standing in the Welwyn Hatfield constituency by visiting the website Who Can I Vote For and entering your postcode.

There you will see the names of those who have submitted their nomination forms so far. That list will not be complete until after Friday 15 November.

The Electoral Commission will also update its Your Vote Matters webpage at that time.

The names of all candidates will then be posted on local authority websites and on notice boards in the area.

On election day, Thursday 12 December, polls will open at 7am and close at 10pm.
